520 Park Avenue celebrates The Park Avenue Tree Lighting
On Tuesday, November 15, friends of The Fund for Park Avenue gathered at the 520 Park Avenue Sales Gallery to celebrate the 2016 Park Avenue Tree Lighting at a reception hosted by Zeckendorf Development and First Republic Bank. Rain and the increased traffic did nothing to keep people away from this festive party which featured remarks by Robert A. M. Stern, founder and senior partner of the firm that is designing 520 Park Avenue.
Mr. Stern, a longtime supporter of The Fund, complimented the work The Fund does “in burnishing Park Avenue’s reputation as one of the world’s greatest addresses.” He went on to describe 520 Park Avenue as being “distinctly of New York, designed to fit comfortably into its historic surroundings from sidewalk to skyline” comparing it to the “collection of tall residential buildings being realized around the south end of Central Park.” He vividly described how residents would enter the building under a suspended bronze canopy through the double-height arched doorway into to a richly-detailed marble lobby. And beyond, a vaulted salon will open into a walled garden with double-tiered plantings and limestone fountains. Three large glass oculi set into the garden paving will let light into the double-height swimming pool below.
Guests enjoyed the sneak peek into what life will be like in one of the 33 apartments in Park Avenue’s newest luxury building – especially comparing how the dramatic city views vary from floor to floor (thanks to the technology available in the sales gallery).
In her welcoming remarks, Barbara McLaughlin, President of The Fund for Park Avenue, thanked everyone for their support because “The Fund really relies solely on annual contributions from the community to keep the malls looking their best throughout the year. The seasonal highlights include spring tulips, summer begonias, fall mums and in the winter, illuminated fir trees.’
The tradition of lighting the trees on the Park Avenue Malls each winter began in 1945 to honor the men and women who died in WWII. Today, the trees serve as a memorial to all who have lost their lives defending our country. The 2016 Park Avenue Trees will be lit on the evening on Sunday, December 4th following a ceremony outside the Brick Presbyterian Church. L’Olivier Floral Atelier provided the flowers and guests left with The Fund’s “signature” tree-shaped cookie from Eleni’s as well as boxes of truffles and umbrellas courtesy of First Republic Bank.
Among the guests were: LeMerle Brinkley, Patricia Burnham Brock & William Brock, Cricket & Richard Burns, Paula & Tom Burchill, Julia Cahill, Irene Cassina, Diane & Peter Chapman, William Dessoffy (First Republic Bank), Barbara Dixon, Nancy Farrell, Martha & John Glass, Randall Gianopulos, Mark Gilbertson, Karen Goldman, Kathleen Hale, Duane Hampton, Lillian Heidenberg, Sharon Hoge, Melanie Holland, Alexandra & Eric Hoyle, Konrad Keesee, Barbara Klett, Karen Klopp, Jack Lynch, Alison Mazzola, Sylvia Mazzola, Martha McLanahan, Grace & Chris Meigher, Kevin McLaughlin, Chappy Morris, Wendy Moonan, Ezra Nasser, Polly Onet, Victoria Ostrowsky, Susan & George Relyea, Jonathan Resnick, Roberta Sandeman, Lisa Semple, Polly Sheehan, Susan Stephenson, Ronald D. Spencer, Esq., Thor Thors, Karen & Clay Tompkins, Wally Turner, Georgina Schaeffer, Wally Turner, Polly Sheehan, Diane Van Amerongen, Lo van der Valk and William Zeckendorf (Zeckendorf Development).
