October 2, 2017 Octoberfest - A Night Celebrating Solar One Programs

Solar One, a leading non-profit environmental education organization in NYC, held its annual Oktoberfest fundraiser on October 2, 2017 at its site on the banks of the East River at 23rd Street. Under a tent and moonlit night, more than 300 guests were treated to a Bavarian styled event complete with bratwurst, German beer, and music provided by the the Ja Ja Jas.
Guests learned about Solar One’s programs through testimonials provided by Meredith McDermott, Director of the NYC Department of Education’s Sustainability Initiative, who spoke about Solar One’s education program in more than 650 NYC schools; Jill Poklemba, Director of Development and Communications for the Fortune Society, who spoke about Solar One’s Green Construction Training program at Rikers Island; and from Mason Cavall, Director of Housing, Capital Development and Special Projects for Housing Works, who told the audience about Solar One’s help in developing one of the first community shared solar projects in the city for Housing Works.
The event raised $55000 to support Solar One's environmental education programs. Chris Collins, the Executive Director also introduced Elizabeth Yampierre, the Executive Director of UPROSE, who discussed the conditions on the ground in Puerto Rico and what was needed to rebuild a resilient Puerto Rico. Chris Collins asked the audience to contribute to Solar One's deployment of solar panels to Puerto Rico that will support communications efforts on the ground and an additional $5000 was raised during the event. Guests were also invited to attend the groundbreaking of Solar One's new environmental education center that will be take place at Solar One on October 17, 2017 at 10am.
