The Kindness of Strangeness Tennessee William @ 100 _Jan 8, 2011
To mark the 100th birthday of Tennessee Williams, a multi-media panel discussion at the Museum of Arts & Design was the first of many planned events. Joe E. Jeffreys, theatre history teacher at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts Department of Drama, hosted the event and welcomed three distinguished friends and colleagues who knew or worked with Williams. The panel consisted of David Schweizer who, after meeting Williams at Key West in the early ‘70s, went on to direct many of his works; Jeremiah Newton who knew Williams primarily through Andy Warhol superstar Candy Darling about whom he just produced a documentary called Beautiful Darling; and Mitch Douglas, Williams’ last literary agent who also represented such literary greats as Graham Greene and Arthur Miller.
In addition to the lively patter provided by the panel, the event also consisted of film clips of such milestone events as Williams at The Kennedy Center Honors and at the White House. Scattered throughout the audience were Williams’ editors, historians and consultants Thomas Keith and Annette Saddik; Joseph Gianono, composer incidental music for six of Williams‘ plays; Travis Chamberlain currently directing a Williams one act play entitled Green Eyes, Palm Beach Society magazine’s New York and TravelSmart's Editor-at-Large Tom Gates; performance artist and playwright Penny Arcade; actress and close friend of Williams, Charlotte Moore; singing-songwriting team of Michael Garin and Mardie Millit; and singer-pianist Barrett Taylor.
