CONSUELO VANDERBILT EARL
A great-great-grand daughter of “The Commodore” Cornelius Vanderbilt, Consuelo Vanderbilt Earl was the daughter of William Kissam Vanderbilt, Jr. and his wife, mining heiress Virginia Graham Fair, whose father was a partner in the famed Comstock Lode. Her aunt and namesake, Consuelo Vanderbilt, married the Duke of Marlborough and became mistress of Blenheim Palace.
Consuelo Vanderbilt Earl was born into a family at the pinnacle of our nation’s Gilded Age. Over her 107 years, she was a sculptor, world traveler and prominent breeder of Skye and Silky Terriers, her activities and accomplishments appearing regularly in society’s chronicles.
Important timepieces and jewelry date primarily to the 1920s and 30s. Highlighting the collection is a rare Cartier rock crystal and diamond Model A Mystery clock, circa 1928. Also featured are three additional clocks by Cartier and a gold pocket watch by Patek Philippe. Jewelry in the collection offers glittering examples by Cartier, Tiffany & Co. and Black, Starr & Frost. The selection of objets de vertu includes elegant gold, enameled and jeweled accessories by Cartier and other makers.
GOLD COCKTAIL SERVICE FROM THE ALVA
Certain to attract attention is an 18 kt. gold tray and 12 cordial cups by Tiffany & Co. from the Alva, the yacht of William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. Designed by Cox & Stevens and launched in 1931, the 265-foot yacht set a new standard for luxury. Its maiden voyage circumnavigating the globe was documented in the film, Over the Seven Seas, narrated by William K. Vanderbilt, Jr., and in the scholarly publication, Scientific Results of the World Cruise of the Yacht "Alva," 1931, William K. Vanderbilt, Commanding. http://www.doylenewyork.com/content/more.asp?id=267
