HOW TO BE A SMART PACKER, by Anita Sarko
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They should make a horror movie called Plane Travel!, right?
Just when you thought all hope was lost, CARLISLE is here to help. Despite the airlines trying to totally destroy either your look or your bank account with their incomprehensible (except for THEIR bottom lines) decision that one must pay for one’s checked luggage, Carlisle’s experts have a solution. “It’s the concept of not taking your closet with you.” Explained Leena Gurevich, the NY Showroom Director for The Carlisle Collection. “It’s more of a European concept.”
You must admit that this is a better approach than the one Heidi took when she WORE all of her clothes in order to get everything from the top to the bottom of the mountain.
The trick is to create a “core.” And the core rests on techno fabrics. Techno fabrics do not wrinkle (or are, at least, extremely wrinkle resistant), are easy to pack flat or rolled up, stain resistant, lightweight and climate adaptable (the materials breathe).
Despite the above, not everything needs to be made entirely of materials created in test tubes. With the work weekend look we’re featuring using Carlisle and Per Se items, everything begins with the white short-sleeved, scooped neck, ruched-sided STARDUST top ($220), made of a cotton/nylon/spandex blend material.
LOOK 1: TRAVELING TO YOUR DESTINATION
Pair the STARDUST top with navy posyester/elastane blend MIDNIGHT suit pieces. The color of the jacket ($525) and slacks ($315) is important “because we want to get women away from black.” Gurevich says. “With this color and fabric, there is also a sheen.” Gurevich also advises the smart traveler to wear pants. “Skirts are uncomfortable to sit and move in. You want to be able to relax.” Add a necklace, earrings, comfortable shoes and “always make sure you have lipstick on!”

LOOK 2: ARRIVAL & MEETING
You’ve arrived at your destination and you don’t have a lot of time to change. All you’ll need to do is replace the slacks with the MIDNIGHT skirt ($310) “to look professional and clean,” advises Gurevich. You might also remove the necklace and replace it with the navy, white and blue BONNIE silk scarf ($135). “You’ll make a presence with color when you meet clients and colleagues.”

LOOK 3: DINNER
It’s time to go to a fun place for steaks and wine. Pair the MIDNIGHT slacks with the MARINA red-striped sweater ($245), which is made of a blend of silk, cotton, nylon and spandex. The added versatility of this top is due to the silver and gold metal straps and grommets.
Because there are two colors that can be chosen from, the metal embellishments on the top can match just about any other metal found on jewelry, clothing or accessories.

LOOK 4: DAY FOR ONESELF
The day after arrival will be a leisurely day, maybe one spent walking around the city. Let’s say it’s a Saturday in L.A: A great look would combine the white cotton/elastane SAILOR pants ($315) with the navy silk/nylon/cotton/spandex ADRIFT cardigan ($345). The sweater has a white stripe running vertically down the center of its front, studded with metal grommets that compliment the buttons featured on the front of the pants.

LOOK 5: EVENING BASH
It’s evening and you’re not only going to an awards dinner, but you’re being honored. Wow your fans by turning yourself out in the MIDNIGHT skirt, topped by the STARDUST top, under the spectacular daisy-strewn nylon, acrylic and cotton blend CANTON jacket ($695). This is the perfect conversation piece that will compliment, rather than overtake you.

LOOK 6: THE RETURN HOME
It was a magical night, but now it’s time to head back home. Climb back into the MIDNIGHT slacks and pair them again with the MARINA sweater. You’re good to go and you have little to repack before you do.
“You’ve traveled with eight pieces for an entire weekend.” Gurevich announces, triumphantly. “Not only that, but three of the pieces are wrinkle-free. The only exception is the SAILOR pants.” The whole idea is to “minimize your travel wardrobe and maximize your image.”
But, don’t let this paired-down approach lead you to believe you will be a prisoner of the same uniform each time you travel. Again, we are dealing with a CORE. “Because Carlisle uses the same dye lots for every collection, it’s easy to add new items each season to keep your wardrobe fresh. Remember Ladies, great core pieces, great accessories and a great lipstick makes a little goes a long way.”
Now, doesn’t the thought of fitting all you need for an entire weekend into just one small suitcase put a great big smile on your face? And, considering that that suitcase can probably be stashed in your overhead compartment, it just might wipe that smile off the faces of those Machiavellian airlines! That is, before they come up with something equally heinous ...
